Only ONE (1) BLOG this week; no school Friday!
One IMPORTANT discussion that comes out when the weather gets nicer is DRESS CODE.
Should St. Thomas adopt a DRESS CODE POLICY?
What are the advantages/disadvantages of a DRESS CODE?
Are DRESS CODES geared more towards GIRLS?
Explain.

I don't think that people, other than the school staff, cares about others' appearances. I heard a saying once that people are too busy judging themselves to judge other people. St. Thomas can adopt a dress code, I don't really care. Dress codes are only really to stop certain people from wearing what they want to wear. SO, no, they probably shouldn't, 'cause it stops people's freedom, or something like that. There are pretty much no advantages to dress codes, cause they force people to have a very small spectrum of clothes they are allowed to wear. The disadvantages are that it "restrains the freedom of expressing personality through their clothes". People aren't allowed to show what they feel by wearing certain clothes. And suspensions because of Dress code related reasons take away focus on education. Are Dress codes more geared towards girls? Why should they be? Who the hell cares about appearance? If males can wear anything they want, so should females. It makes no sense if a dress code gives exceptions for men, and not women. It's not fair.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with the disadvantages. Great blog!
Delete"People are too busy judging themselves to judge other people." Great quote, Liam. Loved the blog!
DeleteNo St-Thomas shouldn't adapt a dress code policy because I find it completely ridiculous that we have a code to stop us wearing what we want to wear. People should be able to express themselves in what they wear (to a certain extent of course). I don't really see any advantages because the dress code is mostly targeted to us girls. Some people would say it provides less of a distraction but why should us girls be punished for something guys need to control? For example, a disadvatage could be summer. Since the weather is hotter, us girls can't wear tank tops since it's "too revealing". Even if we wear t shirts, we also have the chance of getting dress coded.
ReplyDeleteI agree, there are no advantages to a dress code. Great blog :)

ReplyDeleteI feel like everyone should be allowed to wear whatever they want, as long as it's appropriate for school. People should feel comfortable when they go to school and be able to express themselves. I personally do not see any advantages to a dress code, because it's just restraining people from wearing their own clothes. Also, a big issue with dress codes is that a lot of families aren't able to afford extra clothes for their children. I feel like the dress code is more geared towards girls because everything we wear that shows a bit of skin means that it’s a “distraction” for the boys. It doesn't seem fair for us to have to alter what we wear for something that is out of our control.
I completely agree, you should not have to change because of someone else
Deletei agree we should wear whatever we want and we shouldnt have to change because of other people
DeleteI don't think that a dress code would be a policy worth adopting because, at the end of the day, the pros outweigh the cons. I believe making school a comfortable place enabling personal expression is far more valuable than refraining people from wearing extremely revealing clothing, which happens very rarely. If the school starts to adopt a dress code I feel it would make the whole building feel more uptight and monotone, rather than colorful and diverse. Now, more than ever, we should be working to make students feel more comfortable at school given the circumstances. I do believe dress codes are geared more towards girls because they have more "revealing clothing" but at the end of the day you can't force someone to do something because someone else can't control themselves.
ReplyDeleteI agree, the school should be trying to make a more comfortable environment, who cares what you wear
DeleteI believe that St-Thomas should not have a dress code policy, as long as its not offensive or inappropriate for school. People should be able to wear whatever they want, as it can help them express themselves. I believe there are almost to none advantages to dress codes, besides to prevent offensive or inappropriate clothing. But on the other side, I do believe there are many disadvantages to dress codes, especially to women, as there are many more rules pointed towards them. It sucks for them, as anything that exposes a little bit of skin can be considered 'not allowed' in the dress code. The thing is that its not even their fault, as it causes a distraction for others, which means because of someone else, YOU cannot wear something.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your statement "because of someone else, you cannot wear something" Nice blog!

ReplyDeleteYeah I dont think thats fair. Good blog!
DeleteI agree, it's completely unfair that what you can wear might be changed because someone else is distracted by it.

ReplyDeleteI don't think St. Thomas should adopt a drees code, they simply don't have the money for it, and kids also hate it so I don't see a point in it. The advantage of a dress code would be that we can wake up in the morning and not think about what to put on. The disadvantage is that it cost money, and kids don't get to express themselves through their clothing. I would say that dress codes that are currently in St. Thomas are geared more towards girls and I have some guesses why. The first being that female clothing is a lot more versatile with a lot more different types of clothing pieces. The second being that girls have boobs and guys don't. Which makes the dress code have to target girls even more.
You dont need money for a dress code, and if anything people would think more about what to wear because of restrictions.
DeleteI agree with this 100% great points.
DeleteI don't think dress code policies are necessary, people should be able to wear whatever they want without being punished. I don't think there are any advantages of having a dress code. All they do is stop people from wearing what they want which is a huge disadvantage. I do think that dress codes are steered towards girls, I think they focus on skirt length and ripped jeans and crop tops, these are all things boys don't typically wear. I find it very silly to regulate how much skin people show because someone else's clothes really doesn't affect anyone except whoever is wearing the clothes.
ReplyDeleteI agree what you wear doesnt affect anyone other than yourself, great blog!
Deletei dont think a dress code would be a good idea for our school, kids should be able to express themselves however they want and as long as its not hurting anyone theres really no reason to stop students from this. A lot of schools have uniforms and dress codes so theres no competition between kids but i really disagree with this because it prevents kids from expressing themselves and their creativity. dress codes are definetly more geared towards girls because whenever we show a little bit of skin we get in trouble for "distracting boys". its stupid and it implies that its the girls fault that men cant control themselves.
ReplyDeleteI agree, girls shouldn't be punished if guys can't control themselves, great blog!
DeleteI don’t think that a dress code at our school would be useful. The only advantage is that we would wake up in the morning and not have to find something to wear, but that's not really a good reason to adopt a dress code. The disadvantages with having a dress code are that it would cost money and that people can’t express themselves through their clothing. And if our school would make a dress code, it would probably have the St. Thomas green, and I really don’t like that colour, it’s very ugly. I think that dress codes are geared towards girls more because most guys wear a shirt, a hoodie and pants or shorts but girls have way more different options. I personally couldn’t care less about what a girl wears. Wear what you want, who cares what the school thinks.
ReplyDeleteThe dress code that's in place right now is very strict. I believe it should be up to students to decide whether they think what they're wearing is innapropriate or not. I also think this dress code is bullshit as some teachers at St Thomas live for dress codes and others coudn't care less. The way you dress is a way to express yourself. I do believe though, students shouldn't be permitted to come to school in pyjamas, and anything that they think may be a little innapropriate. I think it should be up to the students to decide what they think is innapropriate or not. As a wise man once said in his blog, "people are too busy judging themselves to judge other people." -Liam Fitzpatrick (line 2)
ReplyDeletei completly agree! nice blog!
DeleteOur school already has dress code rules in place like your tank top straps must be 2 finger lengths wide, your shorts have to go down past your knees, no holes in your jeans and you shirt cannot be too short. But all of these "rules" follow the same pattern; they are pretty much all angled at girls. The excuse that schools come up with is that "It distracts boys from learning". I don't believe this is about the 15-16 year old boys having trouble with keeping to themselves, I think this is due to some staff not being able to retain themselves. Everyone should have the right to express themselves and wear what makes them happy . Both girls and boys should be able to feel comfortable wearing what they want when they enter school.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree, people say that it distracts the guys but I don't think a guy is going to be distracted by a girls knees! Awesome blog!
DeleteI feel like as long as it’s appropriate, people should be allowed to wear whatever they want. Even if we were to get a uniform they would still find something to say about what we wear. Like for example, the skirt would be rolled to high or something else. The only advantage I can think of is that you wouldn’t have to think of what to wear in the morning. I can think of a bunch of disadvantages like not being able to use your clothing to express yourself and also everyone feels comfortable wearing different clothes like for example some people might not feel comfortable wearing a skirt. Dress codes are definitely directed more towards girls because our clothing tends to be more revealing, but I honestly don't think anyone cares other then a few teachers.
ReplyDeleteYeah, people should be aloud to express themselves and to feel comfortable in their clothes.
DeleteI don't think st-thomas should have a dress code. I just think that it doesn't make sense. Sure, sometimes people wear things that are just not okay, but that doesn't mean that you have to punish everyone for it. People should be allowed to wear what they want to wear. They shouldn't be punished for wearing what they feel comfortable in. And who cares if someone shows a little bit of skin? I honestly can't think of a good advantage for a dress code. I mean, people have common sense. People know (I hope) not to show up half naked. The disadvantages of a dress code it that people are held back from expressing themselves. So many people can't wear most of the stuff in their closet because of that stupid code. Personally, I find that the dress code is more directed towards girls, more than boys. I mean, we are not aloud to show/wear spaghetti straps or wear ripped jeans and shorts have to be arm length or something. Also, girls clothing is tend to be more revealing than boys.
ReplyDeleteI agree, people shouldn't be punished for wearing what they feel comfortable in. Great blog
DeleteI don’t believe that St-Thomas should have a dress code. I believe that elementary schools should because they can be useful but once we reach high school I believe it should be up to the students to choose what they want to wear. (within appropriate limits)The disadvantages of having a dress code are that they don’t allow us to express ourselves and create unique identities. The advantages of having a dress code is that you don’t have to plan what you're going to wear in advance. I do believe that the dress code is mostly geared towards girls. I really don’t like that we can’t wear tank tops, ripped jeans or shorts above finger length at school.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of only having dress codes in elementary schools.
DeleteI feel that St Thomas shouldn't have a dress code, because even at the moment the current one is ridiculous, you can't wear ripped jeans, you can't wear shorts/skirts that are shorter than said height, you can't wear tank tops, the list goes on. When the school dress codes someone they're just distracting them from their education by focusing on their clothes. The dress code is mostly targeted to the girls which is pretty stupid. As it's summer weather outside we should be aloud to dress in clothing that is actually weather appropriate and not covered up everywhere. Another excuse is that teachers say that it distracts the guys but I find that stupid too, a guy isn't going to be admiring a girls knees and then thinking about it for the whole class.
ReplyDeletei agree, dress codes are stupid
DeleteI feel like there's already a dress code in play. it's annoying how girls can't wear tank tops, like was so wrong about shoulders? i do however agree that there should be a dress code but not as femininely targeting as the one in schools at the moment. the dress code should be " no pj's (unless pajama day) and nothing inappropriate." students should know what is inappropriate. it shouldn't be teachers who decide since dress codes are put in play so as not to distract other students ( who honestly don't really care.) dress codes are one hundred percent more geard towards females.
ReplyDeleteYeah teachers should't decide on what we can wear. Great blog!
DeleteI don't think St. Thomas should adopt a dress code policy. Everyone has the right to show their personality through clothing. We should be allowed to wear whatever we want as long as it's appropriate for school, of course. I don't see any advantages of the dress code. All it does is to stop people from expressing themselves just because someone else said so. I do believe that dress code is geared more towards girls because guys don't usually wear tank tops or short shorts. I think it's a waste of time to regulate how "revealing" someone's clothing is. There are so many other things to focus on other than if a person's clothes are appropriate or not.
ReplyDeleteI think that there shouldn't be a dress code. I think people overreact over what people wear and to be honest the only people who even pretend to care are teachers. Not to mention that the dress code mostly targets girls with rules applying to crop tops, skirts and other women's clothing. It would definitely be more effective to just have basic rules like no t-shirts containing bad language or inappropriate images.
ReplyDeleteYes, I completely agree, girls should be able to wear what they want, as long as they wear nothing too inappropriate. But that entails very little types of clothing.
DeleteI don't think st Thomas should install a dress code because we are in high school now and should be able to decide what we wear for ourselves. I mean were not little kids. Also the thing that it distracts boys from learning was only ever said by the staff. I don't think that there even are any advantages to this except being easier to choose what to wear. But I already just take the first thing in my closet and wear it. The disadvantages would be that people cant express themselves and it would be a lot more boring to wear the same thing every day. Also someone should be able to wear what makes them feel good. Unfortunately the dress code is mostly for girls for something that the staff believe guys do. I dont think thats entirely fair.
ReplyDeleteI agree we should wear whatever we want! Great blog.
DeletePersonally I prefer having uniforms than a dress code. The dress code is one hundred percent more geared towards girls because the dress code is mostly about the length of your shorts or your skirts and the fact that you cant wear ripped jeans. Also when people do get dressed coded it is almost all the time a girl. The thing I don't really understand is why people are interest in under aged girls knees. Like the people who get turned on by it is the problem. I get having restrictions but it shouldn't be on behalf of children's appearances.
ReplyDeleteTrue, the dress code does restricts both guys and girls from many things including wearing inapropriate shirts and ripped jeans but I think it applies a little more towards the girls.
DeleteI don't think that we should have a dress code, if anything it should be less strict. I'm not sure what's distracting about shoulders and knee caps. Dress codes are definitely geared towards girls. It's really annoying how girls aren't allowed to wear tank tops and shorts (unless they're really long), because it can get really hot in the class and we can't even dress to not be warm. I also don't think that the girls should be the ones punished if guys can't control themselves.
ReplyDeleteI think that having a dress code in a high school is pretty dumb. I think that by 13 you should be old enough to choose what you wear for yourself. I can't really think if any advantages of having a dress code, unless your talking about uniforms, in which the advantage would be that everyone would be wearing the same thing, so people wouldn't have to waste a lot of money on nice clothes or feel left out because they didn't, because everyone wears the same thing. The disadvantage of a dress code would be that people would feel like they could express themselves less. If you can't wear the clothes you want to you can't express yourself through clothes, and for some people that might be a problem. I've never really had much of a dress code when I went to school or any other place, but from what I've heard I'd say that they are geared towards girls more than boys.
ReplyDeleteI don't think we should have a dress code because it's geared towards girls. I never heard anyone our age have a genuine problem with seeing someones shoulder. However, the people who have complained about that are grown adults. I think it's a problem that grown men get distracted by seeing a teenagers shoulder. The blame shouldn't be placed on girls for wearing clothes but rather men for sexualizing teenagers. I think manageable and fair dress code rules like not allowing kids to wear anything that's hateful towards any groups of people should be put in place. At the end of the day, I couldn't care less about what people wear, if you're not hurting anyone then it shouldn't be that deep of an issue.
ReplyDeleteI don't think saint thomas should adopt a dress code policy because people should be able to wear whatever they want. I don't really think there are any advantages to a dress code at our school. The disadvantages are that it could stop people from expressing themselves and therefore make them feel uncomfortable. Dress codes are definitely targeted towards girls, which is stupid. It worries about our shoulders and knees and says it's distracting to others, which doesn't make any sense. Especially when it's summer we should be allowed to wear weather appropriate clothing.

ReplyDeleteI don’t think that our school should adopt a dress code because if someone wears something too revealing, it’s only their fault and their self consciousness. I think that dress codes are too much of a restraint and that people should be free to wear what they want. Dress codes can control people really easily to ensure no one wears something inappropriate although, it hinders people’s ability to be creative in dressing. I think dress coding is more towards girls because they have more clothing options and some of those options are too revealing for school. I think that girls should be able to wear what they want although, they must keep a good balance of appropriate clothing.
ReplyDeleteI don't think St.Thomas should adopt a dress code policy because dress codes restrict people from expressing themselves with there own style, it takes away one form of being unique. It makes them look more like soldiers then students.Though I read once online that dress codes reduce bullying because people don't make fun of what you wear and it helps find your classmates in case if one of them is lost.It also represents the school, showing how the students have the school act can give
ReplyDeleteit a good reputation. I feel that Dress code is for both genders because it restricts the use of inappropriate shirts or skirts that are too short for girls. Dress code can both protect and cage people at the same time.
Let's be honest, there's so much complaint on this topic for no reason, for one the school board should not care what kids wear, it's like their own childish way of thinking they have control, but on the other kid nobody should care that there is a dress code it isn't suppressing your being, by not allowing you to wear exactly what you want, it's school nobody cares what you look like, we all just want to get out and go home. I also think it's unfair to say that the reason why theres a dress code is because revealing clothes are distracting. That is a non statement, I could not be distracted by someone's clothes in a classroom, like I said before I couldn't care less what people wear in school, and they sure as hell aren't distracting me.
