How are you doing in terms of COMMUNITY SERVICE this year?
IB requires you to complete 15 hours.
What have been some of the obstacles in completing your hours during this pandemic?
Have you been fortunate enough to complete some of the community service hours?
Should IB allow you to complete community service hours in your house?
Explain.

Thankfully, during the pandemic, my family has had to chance to do some renovations so most of my community service hours are from doing that. My dad moved into a new house so we spent almost all summer re doing the floors, painting the walls, etc... Another website I found that helped me with community service hours is called Sending Sunshine. Basically this website is made by a small company in Ontario and to earn service hours, you have to make cards for seniors in homes. Each card is worth 30 mins of community service hours. All you gave to do is go to their website and it should explain everything you need to do! Finally, I think IB should let you complete hours in your house since you can't really go anywhere.
ReplyDeleteThat website seems like a really cool way to get community service hours. Great blog
DeleteSounds like a really cool idea, Great Blog!
DeleteI do not think i'm doing well at all for hours, because I barely have five and nothing to really do. I very much believe that this year should require less hours because of everything closing and it being more difficult to get hours in. The main obstacle is that everything is closed, so the places I usually get my hours at are not available. Making it hard to find what to do. To get my hours done, I have shoveled my pathway along with my grandparents and some neighbors walkways as well. I have also cooked dinner for my family or helped cook dinner (it was mostly just me following a recipe). I am also going to do some other time consuming task that benefits the whole family , like organizing all our dvd's in alphabetical order or something. If we were not allowed to do hours at home than I would be screwed.
ReplyDeleteI completly agree with it being hard to find things to do for comunity hours! Nice blog!
DeleteIt's definitely way harder this year than ever before.
DeleteYep. Without the change, I would definitely be in trouble when it comes to hours.
DeleteI had done some, at least an hour, but I have no record of them. Some obstacles have been the fact that many places are closed and the fact that it is cold outside. Another obstacle is that managebac is kind of annoying to deal with. IB should allow us to clean up the forests, (pick of trash) because it's a faster way of collecting hours than having to read a book, do a book report for 15 mins.
ReplyDeleteI had really done any services hours either! Great blog.
Deletei agree 100% with the managebac comment, i dont like it at all.
DeleteThanks! IKR
Deletebtw i meant pick up trash not pick of trash...😂
This year community service has been easier than ever. Right now I think I've done something around 12 hours. I can definitely see how it could be a struggle to find places to volunteer, I mean I can't even go to a movie theater anymore. I just got really lucky with my hours. I think that the school should definitely let us do hours at home, there's no way that everyone can do 15 hours this year without being able to do some at home.
ReplyDeleteI agree, there is no way everyone can do 15 hours without being able to do some at home. Great blog!
DeleteYou've done 12 hours! How did you complete them?
DeleteI think this years services hours have been way harder to achieve have any of the past years. There are very limited options available since they are no sports going on and none of the stores are open. I did a bit of my community services during the summer from soccer but other than that I haven't done anything else. I think Ib should allow us to do your services hours in the house because we spend all our time either at school or in our house.
ReplyDeleteI agree, we can't go anywhere so they should let us
DeleteThis year I will have to get creative with my community service hours because of all the restrictions. Unlike the past years, this year I plan to do them around the house. Typically the majority of my hours would come from volunteering at a residency for elderly but because of the pandemic they are not allowing unnecessary people into the buildings. The coronavirus has really limited our options. I believe the best option is to do our hours at home because everything is closed and we would be exposing ourselves and others.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the best option is for us to do our hours at home! Great blog.
DeleteI think that it has been pretty hard to do my community service hours because usually they were all done outside of school, with other people. I’ve been doing some activities, such as shoveling the hockey rink near my house, shoveling my driveway, etc. I try to complete all of my hours spread out, so that I’m not overwhelmed with them all at once. I feel like it’s a big challenge doing the hours at home, especially considering we have to do 15 hours, but I think we should be allowed to do them at home.
ReplyDeleteI agree, It is a big challenge doing hours at home, especially 15 hours.
DeleteI agree, great blog!
DeleteI haven't done any hours of community service, so I'm really behind. Any suggestions for ways to complete my hours would definitely be welcome. During the pandemic, there isn't much to do outside of our homes because the last thing people need right now is to be around other people. That means that there are less ways to complete my hours, so I'm going to have to be more inventive. I think that IB should definitely let us complete our hours at our houses because we don't have the same opportunities as we did before. However, another thing that would be okay is if they still didn't let us do it at our house, but lower the number of hours we have to do.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest to bake for your family, easy and simple! Great blog!
DeleteI find that this year is a really hard year to do your community service hours. You can't volunteer anywhere since everything is closed. These are the main reasons why I haven't been doing a good job on my hours. I think IB should definitely let us do our hours at our houses since it's really the only option that we have. It's also great to your hours at home since you'll be helping around the house more and keeping busy during this time.
ReplyDeleteI agree, if we can do ours hours at home, it will make it much easier for all, as we could barely tp anything dur to the closure of everything.
DeleteI find that completing our community service hours this year is much harder, as you cannot necessarily do things for others, and as everything is closed for the time being. Although its been hard to find stuff to do, I managed to make a couple of hours renovating our basement, shovelling for my grandparents and walking my neighbour's dog the days I am at home. Even though I say its quite hard to find hours, it's really not the case for me, but for others, Im sure it will. I believe IB should allow you to do community hours at home, but not like chores, such as the dishes... I believe such as shovelling (for those who do not consider that a chore) is one way of doing your hours, while helping out the family.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it is so much harder. They should keep on allowing us to count chores as hours.
DeleteCommunity service has been a challenge I must admit, but since we were able to get hours from home. I am fortunate enough to get some hours because my parents make me do chores because I should help out. I do not get allowance for doing chores anyways so if doing helpful things from home is allowed, then I already have around 20 hours worth of work. I usually help neighbors out with their lawn for community service hours, but since COVID I can't go anywhere so doing hours from home is the only option so I think that the school did the right thing to permit doing hours from home. We really have no other choice, so doing hours from home should stay permitted. I haven't done any hours before the school added this rule so it really helped me out.
ReplyDeleteI am sure community service from home will be a lot easier for all of us. Great blog!
DeleteSo far I haven't done any of my community service hours. I'm really happy knowing that I can do them from home. It would definitely be much harder if there wasn't that option with everyone's current situation. I think it's also a challenge finding things to do even at home like shoveling is only like half an hour and you don't want to submit that because you also have to write a reflection for it. All and all I think it's going to be really annoying to do community service hours.
ReplyDeletei haven't had a chance to do any hours this year, and i honestly had forgotten that we had to do them until yesterday. I think that because covid is still going on we shouldnt have to do them this year or we should only have to do 5 hours instead. I dont think that helping out in your own house should be community service because not only are most people already expected to help out and have chores so it wouldnt be different than any other day but its also not helping the community, its only helping your family.
ReplyDeleteI've been fortunate enough to complete all my community service hours. During the summer, I helped my grandparents by doing house work and helping plant flowers in their backyard. Although I completed all my hours, community service requires at least 2 different activities so I need to find a second one for my hours to be completed. I think IB students should have a break from community service hours this year because it's very difficult to find activities to complete. Hours spent helping around your own house should be considered community service hours because for some people that's all they can do.
ReplyDeletei agree helping the community out is great but it could also an easy way to spread the virus, i think we shouldn't have to do our hours for this year. great blog!
DeleteI have surprisingly got most of my hours done before everything was shut down again. I did about 10 hours help reffing my dads beer league games. I was so fun and easy hours but now with everything being closed it will be hard to do the last 5 hours. I will probably being do odd chores that I don't usually do around the house to finish the few hours I have left. I hope that when things go back to normal, I could be able to ref for more community service hours.
ReplyDeleteI thought that I actually had no hours of community service done, but now I've realized that I'm basically done with the looser rules on what counts for community service hours. My family decided to renovate a room so I spent a good 20 hours on that, doing demo, installing flooring, installing molding, repainting walls and building shelves. I had fun doing it and learned a lot so it didn't feel like a task, instead it felt more like something to kill time during the pandemic. I think IB should allow you to complete community service hours in your house because it gives students a chance to do something useful around the house that they can feel proud of.
ReplyDeleteFor community service, there have been a lot of obstacles such as how can I do this activity without disturbing others. I live in a family of 6 so people will get annoyed easily. That is one obstacle I have. Another one would be to find an activity for the community service. So far, I completely forgot about community service hours, so I haven’t done any, but I will probably get some done. For this occasion only, I believe that these hours should be able to be done at home. Because of the pandemic, it is really hard to do the hours and I believe that doing something irregular at home is a perfect solution.
ReplyDeleteI personally have over 280 hours of community service. During the pandemic is where I got the most hours. Working 7 hours a day at a day camp is how I got 280. I just need to find one more thing to do for not even 30 minutes. IB needs to realize we are still in a pandemic. They need to expect less than other years. For the circumstance we're under, I believe we should be able to do community service in our homes.

ReplyDeleteI haven’t done anything this year regarding community service. I can’t go anywhere so I can’t really do anything. If helping around the house helps, I guess I have a couple hours done but not much. In the past I would do things with my basketball team, around the holidays each year we would go bag groceries. 5 hours each day and every player had to do 2 days. That was an easy 10 hours because I was with my friends and it wasn’t boring. I think that we should be allowed to do community service at home because we literally can’t do anything but go to school and be home.
i was lucky to have partially completed my service hours over the summer, when things were open i volunteered at a summer day camp with kids and was a student monitor, none of the people who volunteered got payed, it was just to help out and i mostly did it for the experience. this was seven hours a day for four days so i got more than enough hours but i think we need at least two different activities so i still have to do a bit more work. i am really glad i got most of them done though, especially since everything is shut down now. i'm not too worried about those other few hours i have to complete because i'll probably just help my grandma around the house or babysit someone's kids for free. while community service is about helping out others i'm not sure if you and your family counts, i think this year it should be an exception though because we can't really go out and volunteer anywhere especially the people who have or have family members with medical conditions.
ReplyDeleteHonestly I was fine for community service, I had most of my hours done at my dads office working on the transport papers that he needs for services, because he is a essential worker in the transporting stuff section he needs all the help he could get. I"ve been there around 2 times to help each time staying around 5 hours so that already adds up to 10. Another time that I did community service was when I had to rake leaves out of my neighbors yard because she has back problems, so that's another hour.
ReplyDeletei have not done any of my community service hours yet because i forgot about them until now. one of the obstacles that we face with doing community service in the middle of a pandemic is that everything is closed, so i will probably just babysit my neighbors kids or help around my house. i think it makes sense that the school let us do our hours at home this year since we are not really allowed to go anywhere except school and our houses.
ReplyDeleteLetting us do our hours at home definitely makes sense. Great blog!
DeleteI'm not doing good in my community service hours at all. I have only done 3 hours at the beginning of the school year, then I completely forgot about it until today. It's definitely not easy to complete all 15 hours since everything is closed and the places don't need any unnecessary volunteers. I think IB should allow us to complete community service hours in our house due to the fact that there is a pandemic going on right now. It's also beneficial for the family because we can help out around the house while getting hours done.
ReplyDeleteNice blog! Me too I completely forgot about them, with everything else it just slipped my mind.
Deletesame, well my plan was to complete 2 by dedicated half of my hours to Mada and maybe street and community by helping out at my synagogue or cutting the grass on someones yard for them.
DeleteBecause of the pandemic going there aren't very many opportunities for community service. I have done things like shovel snow and help out my neighbours but thats about it. Because my dad has a health condition I have to be a lot more careful then other people, so I don't get covid and spread it to him so when opportunities do come up my parents often say that I shouldn't do it for my own health. I think they should reduce our hours because it doesn't seem like the pandemic is getting any better and I dont know how I'm going to complete all of mine.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of community service well I have not really started to to the numerous restrictions and regulation put in place by the the Quebec government many things that I wanted to do to help the community were now forbidden. The most crucial reason is the restriction on social gatherings which restricted me from helping in elementary school's near by, helping in community events, etc. I don't really think that Ib should allow community service hours to be done in the house because even though it may be helping your family keep the house clean that should be a daily task and the point is to help your community not household.
ReplyDeleteThe main obstacle is the pandemic itself. I am almost certain that people are not going around asking school kids to help them out in exchange for community service hours, especially because of the risk of catching a certain virus. I honestly think they should just cancel community services hours this year, because I think it's stupid to have these kids going around looking for jobs, in the midst of a pandemic, where no one is letting these people near them. I have not been fortunate enough to complete service hours during the pandemic, partly because I am very lazy, but also because there is literally nothing to do. I HAVE been fortunate enough to not catch the virus that I am certain I would have if I had done service hours during the lockdown. I do indeed think that we should be able to complete hours from our own house, considering you can't go anywhere. It is unreasonable to force kids to risk their health for free child labor.
